An old allotment with rules that are not adjusted to the current reality and with typologies already defined, was the starting point of this project. Transforming the reduced areas of fractions into programs adjusted to a contemporary way of living was the great challenge.

With defined implementation and cércea, it was intended a building with a modern image and energy and environmental concerns. The use of materials such as concrete and plate, together with plant elements in windows and balconies, are the image of an architecture that is intended to be functional, ecological and flexible as today requires.

All fractions have a nascent/west orientation, with social spaces facing west and having generous balconies, where the landscape extends to Porto and invites to the outside.

Two directions parallel to the streets, thus “breaking” the building in two, reducing the volumetric impact. In this way, it also creates urban fronts, which until now have not existed on this space.

Thus, in order not to have too much impact and to integrate with the the various units, it was chosen to adapt to the topography of the land, separating volumes that shape themselves to the terrain, volumes that give the image of an individual dwelling.

Despite this image of separate dwellings, the building has a common structure, and has a condominium room where the owners of the various units can congregate and where birthday parties can be held, for example.

The slope and orientation of the terrain were the starting point for the proposal of this house.

Naturally, the orientation of the house was found, having its longer side facing the Tâmega valley, resting on the existing support walls of the terrain.

The main rooms of the house were locatedon the upper floor, elevated to provide even better views. With this elevation, all the support spaces were created such as the garage, laundry, storage, etc. as well as access volume to the upper floor. This stands out due to its colour, guiding the access route from the ground.

Attached to the terrain, it was sought at the same time a solid construction, with opaque volumes and spans that open out towards the landscape, creating a balance and harmony between full and empty.

Building with special attention to modern living, with modern, flexible and comfortable spaces. The building is developed over 4 floors with a garden at the rear, where special attention was given to the exterior and interior finishes.

The differentiation of the different periods of the building is clear, and is not intended to be a “collage” of the old. In the building there is a clear ground level with the differentiation of more classic and “heavy” materials like tiles and granite, and the finishing of the extension of the two floors is in painted plaster. The recessed volume of the 3rd floor will finish off the building and will be entirely clad in zinc, thus being highlighting this third level.

This will highlight this third level and seek to establish a relationship with the attic buildings in the historic centre.

The spans were also studied in order to seek harmony. Being narrow and high on the main façade (keeping the pre-existence metric) and more horizontal at the rear where there is no relationship with the pre-existence and the extension is completely contemporary.

Create a resort that respects local traditions and culture and at the same at the forefront of architectural and ecological concepts was the challenge set by the client. Two dominant orientations in the village of TCHIAKPÉ- BENIN dictated the organisation of the space and the distribution of the equipment on the site. These orientations will be the anchor for the foundation and coverings of the different spaces, creating a homogenous and unifying image.

Sustainability will be the basis for all interventions on virgin land so that the ecological footprint is as small as possible. Sustainable and conscious consumption, use of renewable energies, energy efficiency, water saving and reuse, water recycling, use of wood of certified origin, etc, recycling of waste, use of wood from certified sources, etc. will be concepts that will be present from the design phase, through construction and operation of the resort.

STRATEGY

The sense of arrival and the lay of the land were the starting points for developing the programme. These, together with the two strong and dominant orientations in the village of TCHIAKPÉ, define paths and orientations of the buildings. The rigid and geometric routes give way to more organic forms as we move away from the lagoon and reach the bungalows area, which is intended to be more relaxed and natural. All areas are perfectly defined functionally, maintaining the language that will unify the entire Resort.

The deck will be used on all routes in order to have an autoctope material, thus interfering as little as possible in the natural landscape.

For the distribution of the gym spaces, we opted for a simple configuration, clear from the point of view of the routes for users and with functional separation.

From the entrance there is the office area where all the administrative and access control where all the administrative and access control is located. Adjacent to this we have the changing rooms, in order to concentrate the various infrastructure networks.

At the back of the space, we will have the 3 studios of specific activities – Crossfit, cycling and multifunctional.

Separating the changing room/circulation area from the large cardio/fitness area, there will be a series of spaces, assessment offices first aid station, as well as the social areas.

This way, when entering the space we have a perception of the whole space and the various functions of the gym.

An unfinished building, with an outstanding location in the and set in a farm with exceptional natural heritage.

This building would later become the starting point, composed of an outdoor swimming pool, a support bar and other future projects of a larger complex destined for tourism, taking advantage of the natural conditions and the infrastructures initiated by it.

It was soon realised that the built-up area was not sufficient for the intended programme and it would be necessary to enlarge the existing volume. This extension was seen as an opportunity to give the building a contemporary architectural language, as well as an opening to the exterior of an initially closed volume.

The wooden body appears at first floor level on the facade of the of the bedrooms, allowing the creation of balconies that serve as connection between the interior and the landscape that extends to the mountains. This volume embraces and contours the initial construction, announcing the entrance, ending oriented towards the arrival path.

In order to reduce the impact and volumetry of the front elevated floor, it was decided to create different planes through the entrance and volume of the bedrooms. With this option the goal was to achieve alignments and create a more human scale.

The house will be composed of three overlapping volumes, one in granite (conveying an entrance marking image) on a more prominent plane, another plastered, which protects the the glazed openings to the south, and at the same time transmits an image of lightness by opting for the white colour and yet another plastered, giving more privacy.

The functional distribution is managed according to the desired levels of privacy, providing at the same time different experiences and appropriations of space.

Spaces open to the exterior, but at the same time with the privacy and intimacy necessary in a allotment and different use environments characterize this villa. The granite foundation and the first floor in a darker, more advanced tone, with a denser mass, leaving the intermediate space light and transparent, with a greater relation to the exterior.

How to intervene in an existing building was the proposed challenge, associated with a functional programme that is in some ways quite traditional for a single-family dwelling.

After analysing the constraints and conflicts of the various possible approaches, why not assume and transport the linearity of the architectural solution to be developed, thus assuming an almost clean and longilinear volume?
